What is that smell?
I can't stand it anymore!
OK, the weather changed a little, and it warmed up just enough to run the air
conditioner in your car. Hopefully you have periodically used it during the year to keep the
system internally lubricated. This time it's a little odd though…
I know that smell !
You've smelled it before. You remember it, but your senses just aren't what
they used to be. Your vehicle is suffering from a culture. Not a lack of it, but rather an abundance
of it. It's mildew! It's in your car and growing.
But I can't find it !
Chances are the mildew odor started shortly after using the air conditioning
system - AH HA! A clue! Give up? It's in the vent system in your car, specifically in the bottom
of the evaporator. The evaporator is inside housing, generally under the dash. It contains the
coils the freon runs through to cool the inside air. The cold freon condenses moisture in the air,
much as a cold glass of liquid sweats on the outside. The condensed moisture collects in the bottom
of the evaporator housing and drains outside the car You can get rid of it in a very simple manner:
Open the doors wide (not while driving), turn the fan on it's highest speed, select
fresh air on the dash, turn on the A/C, then using a spray can of Lysol or equivalent, and spray it
into the vents on the outside of the car, near the base of the windshield. This will pull the Lysol into
the vents and coat the areas where the mildew collects / breeds. Continue to run the fan for a
while, as the Lysol in concentration can be a bit tough to breathe. It will clear out, and the mildew
should be gone.
Keep your eyes on the road!
