Keeping your cool


    Last week we looked ways to keep the interior of your vehicle a little cooler.
Now a few things to keep your vehicle's air conditioning system in top shape, and what to do
if it isn't working right. There are a few new options are available if your A/C system needs help.

Use it or lose it
    A vehicle's A/C system needs to be used. The compressors that pump the freon
through the system have a seal in it that needs to be kept lubricated. A/C systems all have a
special type of oil that circulates with the freon, and keeps the compressors' front seal lubricated.
If not used, the seal "dries out" and freon will leak out over time. A tip here: using the defroster on
modern vehicles turns on the A/C to help dehumidify the interior of your car

Blacklight posters and your Air Conditioner
   What do the blacklight posters of the 70's and your A/C system have in common?
A new technology has emerged in the past few years that help the technicians locate leaks in the
A/C systems. An ultraviolet dye can be added to the freon and will leave residue where a leak is.
The technician can then use a special blacklight to spot the leaks.

Options available if repairs are needed
    The older R-12 freon is no longer produced and has become very expensive.
Some options are available if and when your A/C system needs repairs. Retrofitting your present
A/C system to the newer R-134a freon is an environmental issue as well as cost effective.
The R-134a is Ozone friendly and nowhere near the cost of R-12. Ask your technician next time
if retrofitting is a viable option when servicing your A/C system.
